Mr Mark Vause | Director of Music

Mark has been teaching for over 25 years and has a wealth of experience having taught music in a variety of different contexts. He has worked in Primary Schools, Comprehensive and Grammar Schools and held a SLT role in the local Music Service for 8 years. He is currently Director of Music at both Queen Mary’s Grammar School and Queen Mary’s High School Walsall.

Mark qualified as an Advanced Skills teacher in 2002. Since then he has visited many music departments advising and supporting colleagues on a whole range of different areas related to music delivery. This has also included mentoring NQTs.

In addition to offering curriculum support, Mark is also an experienced conductor and arranger of instrumental music and can offer advice and coaching relating to the provision of extra- curricular music.

In each of the schools I have worked in I have seen a transformation in the profile of music thanks to the introduction of various new initiatives. Whilst working for the Local Music Service in Walsall, I led INSET for other music authorities on whole class instrumental teaching and have subsequently been responsible for setting up ‘wider opportunities’ style projects in a number of schools. The most significant of these was the introduction of whole class instrumental teaching in both my current schools, which means every year 7 pupil (300) now learns a musical instrument alongside their classmates. As a direct consequence, we have seen an increase in music results across the school and a dramatic rise in participation of extra-curricular music.

I also have wide experience in supporting music teachers in the writing of schemes of work, assessment, differentiation, managing peripatetic teachers, developing a music website, co-ordinating big musical events across multiple schools and designing accommodation for music departments.

Central to my philosophy, is the belief that music has the ability to change young people’s lives for the better and provide life-long fulfilment and enjoyment. I am very much looking forward to being able to visit and support other music departments in the future.
