Mr James Shea | Head of Digital Learning

I am an experienced teacher who has worked across the key stage but mainly in upper key stage two at New Invention Junior School since 2008. For the past 7 years, I have been the Head of Digital Learning with a responsibility to ensure high-quality computing lessons are taught; E-Safety has prominence across the curriculum and ensure that digital learning enhances our varied curriculum and has a positive impact on staff workload. We have invested in hardware that is constantly used to improve lessons, engage pupils and give parents a window into school life so they too can be informed and engaged in their child’s learning. I have trained and worked with staff to improve pedagogy and ensure technology is used safely and appropriately at all times and have advised a number of local schools and visiting SLTs who have visited the school for consultancy purposes.

The result of these changes has undoubtedly benefited the school. Children write with an audience and are motivated to share work from school digitally. The developing pedagogy and improvements in the engagement of all pupils have been a significant factor in our high performing year six end of key stage results. Parents feel empowered and informed and feel as though they are part of a pupil’s learning journeys as they have quick and easy access to much of the learning completed in school. Also, our ever-improving computing curriculum is continually evolving to embrace new technologies and ensure that children leave New Invention with the necessary digital skills and knowledge of digital citizenship that their futures will demand.
