Mr Ben Adams | Lead Practitioner of Maths

I have enjoyed teaching mathematics in both comprehensive and selective schools. Before my appointment as Curriculum Leader, Governor and Senior Leader of Teaching and Learning at Queen Mary's High school in Walsall, I spent a number of years as a pastoral leader in a school in Hednesford.

I first started assisting other schools as an A-level consultant in 2006, offering support and revision classes at Key Stage 5 where A-level specialism was lacking.  Rapidly, these developed into Key Stage 4 revision classes and curriculum advice, especially focusing on how particular topics could be developed and taught in a rigorous and stimulating way, facilitating and developing growth mindset traits.

Currently I run a Key Stage 2 Maths Hub and have spent time with a variety of primary schools addressing some of the issues with the new curriculum.  I work closely with trainee teachers and offer workshops and lectures for the mathematics trainees at Birmingham City University.

I look forward to offering support, advice, CPD and INSET in the future for any teachers, departments or schools from Key Stage 2 onwards on any aspect of teaching mathematics and helping students learn.

Impact

I have feedback and evidence from students, teachers and leaders from primary schools, secondary schools and Birmingham City University outlining that that my help and support has been effective and useful.

Since I have been Subject Leader for Mathematics at Queen Mary's High School results have always been impressive. The Mathematics results have consistently been among the best in the school showing a huge positive value added.

Throughout my time as a Curriculum Leader, on average 80% percent of GCSE students made more than the expected progress from their Key Stage 2 levels. I could list a number of results and achievements that I am very proud of, including successful intervention which has enabled no GCSE student to ever drop below a C grade with an average 80% achieving A and A* grades.

The achievement I am most proud of however is that students in my department consistently voice that they love mathematics. My team of teachers under my guidance produce both outstanding results and provide a learning experience that is enjoyable and stimulating.
