Ms Hannah Ladbrooke | Director of Science

Since joining Barr Beacon School, I have ensured the consistent improvement in the quality of assessment within the Science department. The policies and procedures I have put in place have ensured the continued improvement in assessment in science which has led to improved outcomes for students across all age ranges, in exam specific assessment pieces. When leading my team, I am passionate about growing leadership skills, and I have done this successfully for a range of staff who have since been able to take on other roles within my own department as well as other schools. I have supported my team in developing skills in data analysis, effective intervention, leading and communicating effectively with staff as well as supporting them in developing skills in department and whole school monitoring. I have worked hard to develop a cohesive department that work together to support each other’s needs and develop each other’s skills. In doing so I have developed a team of staff who recognise the contributions of everyone from SCITT trainees, to experienced teachers and technicians, and this has ensured that everyone feels like they can contribute and feels valued in the department.


The GCSE Science results increased from 66.3% to 70% A*-C, GCSE Additional Science results increased from 62.5% to 73% A*-C, and increases of A*-B in triple sciences of between 4-14%, this was due to the changes implemented to the assessment and feedback policy Contributions to weekly department meetings from staff of all ranges including SCITT trainees, NQT’s and experienced staff and contributions to best practice marketplace, a form of whole school CPD, by no less than 4 staff at each opportunity including SCITT trainees, NQT’s and experienced staff. Improvement in department book monitoring against whole school measures. Improved subject specific feedback targets from all staff, improved green pen feedback from students resulting improved performance in 6 mark questions in the exam in all courses and years.
